India's Tax Audit Deadline Passes; Audited Businesses Have Until Nov. 21 to File Returns
The Income Tax Department chased about 12,000 tax professionals before the Oct. 21 cutoff, with more than 19.5 lakh audit reports already filed.

What to know
- India's deadline for tax audit reports for assessment year 2026-27 fell on Oct. 21, after the CBDT moved it from Sept. 30.
- More than 19.5 lakh tax audit reports had been filed by mid-October, when the tax department had reached about 12,000 tax professionals in a reminder drive, The Federal reported.
- Audited taxpayers, including companies and trusts, must file their income tax returns by Nov. 21, three weeks after the original Oct. 31 date.
NEW DELHI
India's deadline for tax audit reports for assessment year 2026-27 passed on Oct. 21, and the next date for audited businesses is now Nov. 21, when their income tax returns fall due. The Central Board of Direct Taxes had pushed both dates back by three weeks in late September, moving the audit report deadline from Sept. 30 and the return deadline from Oct. 31.
The return deadline matters to a wide group: companies, partnership firms and their working partners, trusts, and individuals whose businesses or professional practices are large enough to require an audited set of books. For overseas investors with Indian units and for families running businesses in India, the Nov. 21 cutoff is the main direct tax filing date left on this year's calendar.
What the CBDT changed
The board announced the extension on Sept. 28, according to an ANI report carried by Devdiscourse. It applies to taxpayers listed at serial number 2 of Explanation 2 to Section 139(1) of the Income-tax Act, 1961, the category that covers audit cases. The CBDT said a formal order or notification giving effect to the decision would be issued separately, All India Radio's news service reported.
Tax practitioners had asked for relief. They argued that the window for audits had been squeezed because the deadline for non-audit business returns ran to Aug. 31, according to a PTI report published by the Daily Excelsior. Amit Agarwal, a senior partner at Nangia & Co LLP, told PTI the extension gave businesses "much-needed breathing space" to complete their audits.
A push before the audit cutoff
The Income Tax Department ran a reminder campaign in the weeks before Oct. 21. More than 19.5 lakh (1.95 million) tax audit reports for assessment year 2026-27 had been filed as of Oct. 15, The Federal reported that day, citing unnamed sources. Under an initiative called SAKSHAM NUDGE, the department had reached about 12,000 tax professionals who had filed fewer than half as many audit reports as they did a year earlier, the same report said. The department's e-filing portal also lists an Oct. 16 email reminding filers of the due date, Kotak Neo reported.
Audit reports are prepared under Section 44AB and uploaded by a chartered accountant on the e-filing portal, using Form 3CA where accounts are already audited under another law or Form 3CB where they are not, with the detailed particulars on Form 3CD. The taxpayer must then accept the report on the portal before it counts as filed, according to Kotak Neo.
Missing the audit deadline can carry a penalty of 0.5% of total sales, turnover or gross receipts, capped at 1.5 lakh rupees (150,000 rupees), the report said. It noted that the penalty is not automatic and that relief may be available where a taxpayer shows reasonable cause.
Where the filing season stands
The Nov. 21 deadline is the last large batch of a season that began with salaried taxpayers. Their returns were due July 31, and the deadline for business and professional income without an audit was Aug. 31. More than 7.8 crore (78 million) returns had been filed for assessment year 2026-27 by Aug. 31, according to Income Tax Department figures cited by PTI.
Collections are under pressure elsewhere in the budget. The central government's fiscal deficit reached 42.1% of the full-year target in April through September, as excise receipts fell after a cut in fuel duties, which leaves direct tax receipts from the coming returns and advance tax installments under closer watch.
For audited taxpayers, the practical sequence is now fixed: an audit report accepted on the portal, then a return filed by Nov. 21.
