Thailand Foreign Tourist Arrivals Fall 4.6% to 25.5 Million in First 10 Months of 2026

China is back as the top market, but weaker flows from Malaysia and South Korea leave the kingdom well short of last year's pace heading into the high season.

    What to know

    • Thailand recorded 25.46 million foreign tourist arrivals from Jan. 1 to Oct. 31, 2026, down 4.59% from a year earlier, according to the Ministry of Tourism and Sports.
    • China was the largest source market at 4.19 million arrivals through Oct. 24, ahead of Malaysia at 3.16 million.
    • Foreign tourism revenue reached 1.21 trillion baht through Oct. 24, down 2.68% from a year earlier.

Thailand received 25.46 million foreign tourists from Jan. 1 to Oct. 31, 2026, a decline of 4.59% from the same period last year, according to Ministry of Tourism and Sports data reported by The Star on Nov. 2.

The shortfall matters for one of Asia's most tourism-dependent economies and for the hotel owners, airlines and airport operators whose earnings ride on it. The kingdom drew a record of nearly 40 million visitors in 2019, The Star noted. Ten months into 2026, it is still running behind 2025, which was itself a weaker year.

Thailand's Gap Widens Through the Year

The decline has deepened as the year has gone on. Through Aug. 31, arrivals totaled 20.94 million, down 3.08% from a year earlier, bne IntelliNews reported, citing the ministry. By Oct. 24 the cumulative count was 24.93 million, down 4.43%, according to ministry figures reported by Kaohoon International. The full-month total pushed the decline to 4.59%.

Applying that percentage to the 10-month total implies roughly 26.7 million arrivals in the same period of 2025, which means Thailand is about 1.2 million visitors behind last year's pace.

Spending has held up a little better than headcount. Revenue from foreign visitors reached 1.21 trillion baht through Oct. 24, down 2.68% from a year earlier, according to the ministry figures cited by Kaohoon. A smaller drop in revenue than in arrivals suggests visitors who did come spent somewhat more on average, or stayed longer.

Domestic travel is partly filling the gap. Thai residents made 165.54 million trips through Oct. 24, up 2.02%, generating 971.8 billion baht in revenue, up 2.6%, the ministry data showed.

For hotel investors, the picture is mixed. CBRE said in its third-quarter Asia Pacific hotel brief that Thai arrivals in the first half were weaker than expected and that the full-year forecast had been cut to 33 million. It said hotel investment in Thailand had slowed slightly, though foreign buyers' appetite remained strong and Bangkok's diversified demand was performing relatively steadily.

China Rebounds as Korea and Malaysia Fall Back

The country mix has shifted sharply. China, which had slipped behind Malaysia during 2025, is the largest market again. Chinese arrivals reached 4.19 million through Oct. 24, according to the ministry figures, after rising 16.05% in the first eight months of the year, IntelliNews reported.

Malaysia ranked second at 3.16 million, followed by India at 1.88 million, Russia at 1.36 million and South Korea at 912,597. Korean arrivals have fallen fastest among the big markets: they were down 24.78% through August, the steepest drop among Thailand's top 10 sources. Malaysian arrivals were down 11.87% over the same period.

The weekly data point to some improvement as the high season begins. In the week of Oct. 18 to 24, Thailand received 501,965 foreign visitors, up 2.99% from the week before, according to Kaohoon. Long-haul arrivals rose 12.03% to 199,954, while short-haul arrivals fell 2.24% to 302,011. India and Russia posted double-digit week-on-week gains, while Chinese arrivals dropped 24.17% from the previous week.

Thailand's regional rivals are seeing a different pattern. Hong Kong logged a 22% jump in September visitor arrivals, driven almost entirely by mainland travelers, while its short-haul markets shrank.

What the Last Two Months Must Deliver

The arithmetic for the year is tight. In 2025, Thailand welcomed 32.97 million foreign visitors who spent 1.53 trillion baht, IntelliNews reported. Using the implied 2025 figure for January to October, that left about 6.3 million arrivals in the final two months of last year.

Reaching 33 million in 2026 would require about 7.5 million arrivals in November and December, roughly 20% more than in the same months of 2025. Matching last year's total of 32.97 million would take nearly as many. The ministry had said earlier that it expected 2026 visitor numbers and revenue to stay close to 2025 levels, according to IntelliNews.

The central bank has flagged the same softness. The Bank of Thailand's September report showed foreign arrivals fell 6.3% from August on a seasonally adjusted basis, citing weaker short-haul demand and higher travel costs.

The ministry publishes cumulative arrival counts weekly, so the first read on whether the high season can close the gap will come with the November tallies.
