    NEW DELHI

Maruti Suzuki India sold 276,120 vehicles in October, its highest monthly total on record and 25% more than a year earlier, as the Navratri and Dussehra holidays brought a wave of festive buying across India's car market.

The figures, filed with stock exchanges on Sunday, matter beyond India's borders. Maruti is the country's largest carmaker, and its monthly sales are a running gauge of spending by Indian households, the consumer base that Japanese and Korean carmakers such as Hyundai, Kia and Toyota are also chasing. October's numbers also arrive a week after Maruti reported that its quarterly profit fell 27% despite record volumes, so investors will be watching whether the extra units can offset higher costs.

    Maruti Suzuki's record month

Sales in India, including light commercial vehicles, reached 216,789 units, up 20% from 180,675 in October 2025, according to the company's release as reported by ANI. Domestic passenger vehicle sales rose about 20.5% to 212,384.

Sport utility vehicles did the heavy lifting. Maruti's utility vehicle sales jumped 26% to 97,787 units, while its mini, compact and midsize cars rose 18.4% to 100,877. Sales of the Eeco van were nearly flat at 13,720.

Exports grew faster than any domestic segment, climbing 59.3% to 49,872 units from 31,304 a year earlier. Maruti also supplied 9,459 vehicles to another carmaker, up from 8,915.

The October total beat Maruti's previous monthly high of about 243,000 units set in May 2026, DriveSpark reported. Domestic passenger vehicle sales were up about 17% from September, according to the same report.

For the first seven months of the fiscal year that began in April, Maruti has sold 1,655,498 vehicles, about 27% more than in the same stretch a year earlier.

    Rivals

Rivals also reported higher October sales, with Tata Motors holding second place behind Maruti, according to a tally by Autocar India. Toyota Kirloskar Motor and Honda were among the brands whose sales fell from a year earlier.

Autocar India put total passenger vehicle sales for the month at 498,208 units across 14 manufacturers, though its tally mixes company wholesale figures with registration data for some smaller brands, so the total is not strictly comparable with official industry numbers.

What the numbers do and do not show

Most of the figures carmakers release on the first of the month are wholesale dispatches: vehicles shipped from factories to dealers, not cars sold to households. In a festive month, dealers stock up ahead of peak buying days, which can flatter wholesale numbers if retail demand later falls short.

That timing matters this year. Autocar India noted that October covered the Navratri and Dussehra period, with Dhanteras and Diwali, traditionally the busiest days for vehicle purchases, falling in November. Part of October's shipments was therefore stock for sales that have not happened yet.

The mix is also shifting. At Maruti, utility vehicles now account for nearly as many domestic sales as all of its small and midsize cars combined, a sign that buyers are trading up to larger, pricier models. Exports, which rose to about 18% of Maruti's October total according to DriveSpark, give the company a second source of volume if domestic demand cools after the holidays.

The next test comes when carmakers report November dispatches. Those figures, and registration data for the weeks around Dhanteras and Diwali, will show whether the cars shipped to dealers in October found buyers.
