Vietnam's VN-Index Ends October 1.5% Lower as Foreign Investors Keep Selling
A late-month rally on Vingroup shares faded in the final week, as banks slid and overseas funds sold on each of the last two sessions.

What to know
- The VN-Index closed at 1,741.62 points on Oct. 30, down 1.5% from its Sept. 30 close of 1,768.62.
- Foreign investors sold a net VND628.57 billion of shares on Oct. 30 and VND456.6 billion on Oct. 29, according to Japan Securities.
- Techcombank reported record third-quarter pre-tax profit of VND10.4 trillion, yet its shares fell 3.36% on the month's final session.
HO CHI MINH CITY
Vietnam's benchmark VN-Index closed October at 1,741.62 points, down 1.5% for the month, after foreign investors sold heavily into the final sessions and bank shares gave back gains from a strong earnings season.
The index fell 0.80% on Friday, Oct. 30, its second straight loss, according to market data published by Nhan Dan and a daily report from Japan Securities Co. (JSI), a Hanoi-based brokerage. It had ended September at 1,768.62, according to the Financial and Monetary Market Magazine. For regional fund managers, the pattern matters more than the size of the drop: overseas investors kept selling in the final days of the month, weeks after Vietnam's formal entry into FTSE Russell's emerging-market indexes.
Foreign funds sell into the close
Overseas investors sold a net VND628.57 billion of shares on Oct. 30, JSI said, with Vingroup and Techcombank taking the brunt of the outflow and no stock drawing meaningful foreign buying. The day before, they sold a net VND456.6 billion, led again by Techcombank and by technology group FPT. On Oct. 23, net foreign sales came to VND479.92 billion.
Thursday's session set up Friday's loss. The index slipped 0.62% to 1,755.61 on Oct. 29, with FPT down 2.41%, PV Gas down 2.19% and energy stock BSR down 3.83%, JSI said. Decliners outnumbered advancers 215 to 97.
Breadth on the last day was poor. Decliners outnumbered gainers 253 to 72 on the Ho Chi Minh City exchange, and the blue-chip VN30 basket fell 1.18%, with 23 of its 30 members lower. Turnover rose 1.16% from the previous session to VND14.67 trillion.
Banks did most of the damage. Techcombank fell 3.36%, Vietcombank 1.57% and Military Bank 2.03% on Friday, while Southeast Asia Commercial Bank and LPBank both dropped more than 3%. A partial afternoon recovery came from real estate and energy: Vinhomes rose 1.45% and gas distributor PV Gas gained 2.63%.
The weakness came despite solid earnings from lenders. Techcombank reported record third-quarter pre-tax profit of VND10.4 trillion, up 25.8% from a year earlier, taking its nine-month figure to VND28.9 trillion, up 23.7%, Vietnam News reported. VIB reported nine-month pre-tax profit of about VND7.6 trillion, up 8%.
A rally that ran out of steam
The month was not one-way. The VN-Index closed at 1,691.97 on Oct. 20, then jumped 2.76% the next day to 1,738.67 as Vingroup, Vinhomes and Vincom Retail all hit their daily price ceilings, JSI said. Turnover that session climbed 46% to VND19.35 trillion, the busiest day of the stretch.
The index kept climbing to 1,774.15 on Oct. 23, its best close of the second half of the month. JSI noted that investors were cautious as the index approached 1,800 points, a level the brokerage described as resistance. From there it drifted lower for most of the following week, with trading thin ahead of the U.S. Federal Reserve's policy meeting.
Liquidity is a persistent concern. Brokerage VPS Securities, in its third-quarter results, attributed lower revenue in part to average trading value across Vietnam's three exchanges falling 58% from a year earlier, as cited by JSI. Daily turnover on the main bourse mostly ran between VND13 trillion and VND17 trillion in the second half of October.
Corporate news offered some offsets. Lotte and Phat Dat Real Estate broke ground on Oct. 23 on the Lotte Eco Smart City project in Thu Thiem, a VND60 trillion development in Ho Chi Minh City. Brewer Sabeco announced a 30% cash dividend of VND3,000 a share, worth an estimated VND3.85 trillion, with a record date of Dec. 29 and payment on Feb. 2, 2027.
Inflation is the macro backdrop
The selling comes as consumer prices run ahead of the government's goal. Vietnam's consumer price index rose 5.08% from a year earlier in September, and the nine-month average increase of 4.52% already sat above the official target of about 4.5%, The Investor reported, citing the National Statistics Office. Producer prices for industrial goods rose 4.37% over the nine months.
National Statistics Office Director Nguyen Thi Huong told reporters in early October that pressures from input costs and energy prices remained.
The statistics office had not published October figures for consumer prices, trade, industrial output or foreign investment as of Sunday. Those numbers, and whether foreign selling persists, will set the tone for November. The VN-Index would need a gain of about 3.4% from Friday's close to reach the 1,800 mark.
