China's Services Sector Stalls at 50 as New Orders Sink to 45.2 and Price Cuts Spread
Holiday travel lifted rail, hotels and entertainment in October, but finance dragged, spending per trip slipped and service firms kept cutting prices.

What to know
- China's official services business activity index slipped to 50.0 in October from 50.2, while the services new orders index fell 1.5 points to 45.2, NBS data showed.
- The services selling price index dropped a full point to 49.6, after the private RatingDog survey found September's price cuts were the steepest in almost four and a half years.
- Travelers made 826 million domestic trips over the Oct. 1 to 7 holiday and spent about 738.4 billion yuan, or roughly 894 yuan a trip, Ministry of Culture and Tourism figures showed.
BEIJING
China's services sector stopped growing in October, with the official services business activity index slipping to exactly 50.0 from 50.2, while a gauge of new orders for service providers fell 1.5 points to 45.2, National Bureau of Statistics data showed.
Services account for the largest share of China's economy, and the October survey shows demand thinning even in a month that included the weeklong National Day holiday. For investors in Asia, that matters beyond the mainland: regional airlines, casino operators, hotel groups and consumer brands depend on Chinese household spending, and the survey suggests service firms are protecting volumes by cutting prices.
The weakness was not confined to services. The broader non-manufacturing index, which adds construction, fell to 49.7 from 50.2, and the composite output index dropped a full point to 49.7, according to the NBS and the China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing. The factory side, covered in our report on the official manufacturing PMI's fall to 49.3, shrank as well.
Finance Drags China's Services PMI as Holiday Travel Lifts Hotels
The headline number hid a split. Huo Lihui, chief statistician at the NBS Service Survey Center, said activity indexes for rail transport, accommodation, and culture, sports and entertainment rose noticeably on holiday travel and spending, and all stood in expansion. Water transport, postal services, and internet software and IT services were above 55, a level that signals fast growth.
Finance pulled the other way. Huo said the financial industry's index fell sharply and was the main reason services softened. The NBS release listed capital market services, insurance and real estate services below 50.
Demand indicators were weaker than activity. Services new orders dropped to 45.2, deep in contraction, and the non-manufacturing new orders index fell 2.1 points to 44.4, pulled down by a 5.7-point slump in construction orders to 40.0. Service firms stayed hopeful: their index of business expectations was 55.2, Huo said.
Price Cuts Spread Across Chinese Service Providers
Pricing is the clearest warning in the data. The services selling price index fell a full point to 49.6, meaning more firms cut charges than raised them, while the services input price index eased 0.8 point to 51.4. Costs are still rising, if more slowly, while selling prices are falling.
The private survey had flagged the same squeeze a month earlier. The RatingDog China General Services PMI, compiled by S&P Global, rose to 51.6 in September from 51.4, beating a 51.1 forecast, according to investingLive. But firms cut selling prices for the first time in four months, and by the most since April 2022, Reuters and investingLive reported, with investingLive citing intense competition. RatingDog founder Yao Yu said those cuts, set against continued cost increases, were squeezing margins. Composite selling prices fell for the first time in nine months because of discounting in services.
Holiday figures point in the same direction. Chinese travelers made 826 million domestic trips over the Oct. 1 to 7 National Day holiday and spent about 738.4 billion yuan ($110.2 billion), the Ministry of Culture and Tourism said, according to China Daily. Daily trips rose 6.3% from a year earlier and daily spending 4.3%, so spending grew more slowly than travel. That works out to roughly 894 yuan a trip. Travel Extra, using the same totals, put this year's average at 893.92 yuan, down 1.9% from 911.04 yuan in 2025, and called it a four-year low. Inbound visits reached about 2.98 million, with daily visits up 6.5% from 2025, the ministry said.
What Investors Watch Next in China's Services Data
Economists quoted by Reuters after the official survey called for more support for household demand. "Insufficient demand is increasing downward pressure on the economy," said Zhang Liqun, an analyst at the China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing. Lu Zhe, chief economist at Soochow Securities, urged wider subsidies for mortgage interest payments to shore up household confidence, Reuters reported. Reuters also reported that the economy is expected to meet Beijing's 4.5% to 5% growth target without new stimulus after it grew 4.5% in the third quarter.
The private RatingDog services PMI for October, compiled by S&P Global, had not been released as of early Tuesday, Nov. 3, Hong Kong time, and is expected later this week. The two sub-indexes to watch in the services report are selling prices, after September's steepest cut in almost four and a half years, and new export business, which investingLive said had grown for five straight months through September, the longest run since 2024.
