Coupang, South Korea's largest online retailer, reported a third-quarter operating loss of $450 million on Tuesday, Nov. 3, swinging from operating income of $162 million a year earlier, after a July fire at a leased fulfillment center in Incheon cost it $248 million. Total net revenue rose 7% to $9.96 billion, or 11% in constant currency.
It is the latest in a run of loss-making quarters for the South Korean e-commerce group. Stripping out the fire, Coupang still lost $202 million at the operating line, the company said, as margins in its core Korean retail business narrowed sharply. Its shares trade in New York, where the results were released on Tuesday, Nov. 3.
Net loss attributable to shareholders was $501 million, or 28 cents a share, compared with a profit of $95 million, or 5 cents, a year earlier. Adjusted EBITDA fell 72% to $116 million, a margin of 1.2%.
What the Incheon fire cost Coupang
The company's quarterly filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission breaks the fire charge into two pieces: $95 million of inventory losses booked in cost of sales, and $153 million of fixed-asset impairments and related losses booked in operating expenses. Coupang said it carries property and liability insurance and intends to pursue claims, but that it has not recognized any recoveries because the amount it might receive is unknown. It also warned it may face further costs it cannot yet quantify, including remediation, regulatory penalties and litigation.
The blaze burned for more than 61 hours across two floors of the eight-story building, Inside Retail Asia reported in August, and Coupang reportedly agreed to compensate sellers in its Rocket Growth program for lost stock. Korea JoongAng Daily had reported in August that losses of about 350 billion won were expected to land in the third quarter. Insurance payouts for losses of this kind typically take years, the paper noted.
Without the fire, gross margin would have been 26.7%. As reported, it fell 364 basis points to 25.7%.
Core Korean retail margins narrow
Product Commerce, the segment that includes Rocket Delivery, Rocket Fresh and the WOW membership program in Korea, grew revenue 5% to $8.37 billion, or 8% in constant currency. Its gross profit fell 7% to $2.38 billion, and segment adjusted EBITDA dropped 45% to $385 million, a margin of 4.6% against 8.8% a year earlier.
Customer numbers held up. Product Commerce active customers rose 2% to 25.2 million, and revenue per active customer climbed 3% to $332, or 6% in constant currency. That gap between reported and constant-currency growth matters for Asian investors comparing Coupang with domestic retailers: the company reports in dollars but earns most of its money in won.
The customer base had been tested. In November 2025 Coupang discovered that a former employee had gained unauthorized access to customer accounts, according to the 10-Q. The company issued about $1.2 billion of purchase vouchers to affected customers from January, which it booked as reductions to revenue as they were redeemed; redemption ended in mid-April. In June, South Korea's Personal Information Protection Commission fined it 423.6 billion won over the breach and 201.1 billion won over the collection of users' online activity records, Inside Retail Asia reported. Coupang booked about $410 million of administrative fines in the second quarter and has said it will challenge them.
The data breach has, by Coupang's own account in the filing, raised the Korean government's focus on its business. The results also arrive as Korean consumers get some price relief, with inflation easing to 2.8% in October.
Newer businesses grow faster, still lose money
Developing Offerings, which includes the Coupang Eats food delivery app, Rocket Now in Japan, the Coupang Play streaming service, fintech, retail in Taiwan and the luxury platform Farfetch, grew revenue 23% to $1.59 billion, or 27% in constant currency. The segment's adjusted EBITDA loss narrowed to $269 million from $292 million. The filing names Farfetch, Eats and Taiwan as its main revenue sources.
Cash generation weakened. Operating cash flow over the 12 months to September fell to $845 million from $2.37 billion, and free cash flow over the same period was negative $409 million, compared with positive $1.27 billion a year earlier.
Coupang kept buying back stock anyway. It repurchased 12.7 million Class A shares for $201 million in the quarter, at average prices that slid from $17.43 in July to $15.26 in September, according to the 10-Q. That leaves $706 million under the $1 billion program its board authorized on May 5.
Other bills are pending. Korea JoongAng Daily reported in August that Coupang faced a tax assessment of about $208 million from a National Tax Service audit, which it plans to contest, and that the retail industry expected a Fair Trade Commission fine of about 200 billion won related to Coupang Eats terms for merchants. Coupang also has an appeal pending against an earlier Fair Trade Commission decision for which it paid a fine of about $121 million in installments, the last in June 2026.
The insurance claim on the Incheon center is the figure to watch: any recovery Coupang books in coming quarters would offset part of the $248 million already charged.
